Q: AM I REQUIRED TO TAKE DRIVER’S ED?
A: Anyone who has never had a license is required to take driver’s ed, regardless of age or experience. If you have a valid license from another country, you only have to take the Drug & Alcohol class.
Q: HOW MUCH DOES DRIVER’S ED COST?
A: The tuition is currently $320. You may start with as little as $200 down on the first day. Click here for more info.
Q: HOW LONG DOES THE COURSE TAKE?
A: It varies for each person. It’s possible to finish the classes in as little as 3 weeks (if you register for the Fast Lane program) but it could take as long as a few months, depending on circumstances such as when you’re available and how busy we are.
Q: HOW MUCH TIME DO I HAVE TO COMPLETE IT?
A: You have up to three years to complete the course. If you have not paid your tuition and finished the course within three years, your records will be erased and you will have to start over from the beginning.
Q: DO I NEED A LEARNER’S PERMIT?
A: You will have to get a learner’s permit in order to drive, but you can start the classes without it. Everyone, regardless of age or experience, is required to get a learner’s permit. If you’re UNDER 25 you must hold your learner’s permit for 9 months and get 60 hours of driving practice (in addition to the six hours included in driver’s ed) before you can get a license. If you’re OVER 25, you only have to hold your permit for 45 days and practice for 14 hours.
Q: HOW DO I GET A LEARNER’S PERMIT?
A: To obtain a learner’s permit you must take a 20-question written test at the MVA. The fee is $50, and that pays for the driving test as well. There is no need to schedule an appointment. If you don’t pass the test you may come back on another day to retake it. For more information visit the MVA website.
Q: WHEN ARE THE CLASSES HELD?
A: Schedules vary by location. Visit our schedule page for current dates and times.
Q: WHERE ARE YOU LOCATED?
A: We are located at Annapolis Rd., Hyatstville.
Q: HOW CAN I SIGN UP?
A: You can register here for an upcoming class, or call us at 240-770-5212
Q: HOW CAN I PAY MY TUITION?
A: Most people pay their tuition or a $200 deposit ahead of time, which can be done over the phone (we accept Visa, MasterCard, and Discover), or by mailing a check to our Annapolis office. You may also pay on the first day of class with cash, check, or credit/debit.
Q: WHAT SHOULD I BRING WITH ME?
A: Bring your tuition or down payment, your learner’s permit (if you have one), and a pen and paper to take notes.
Q: ARE PARENTS REQUIRED TO COME IN ON THE FIRST DAY?
A: Parents are not required to be here, but they are encouraged to stay for the first hour of class, for an orientation and overview of company policies.
Q: WHAT IF I HAVE TO MISS A DAY?
A: You are allowed to miss up to four classes, but you must make up any missed classes before you can be placed on the waiting list for driving hours. If you miss more than four classes, you will have to start over from the beginning.
Q: I HAVE AN INTERNATIONAL LICENSE.
WHAT MUST I DO TO GET A MARYLAND LICENSE?
A: If you have a valid license from another country, you do NOT have to take driver’s ed. You are only required to take a 3-hour Drug & Alcohol education program, plus both tests at the MVA. Visit the MVA website for more information.
Q: I WAS ASSIGNED TO A DRIVER IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM. WHAT’S THAT?
If you’re assigned to the DIP it means that you’ve either received a moving violation, acquired 5-7 points within 2 years, or need to have your license reinstated. The MVA requires you to take the class within 30 days of receiving the notice, or else your license will be suspended.
Q: ARE YOU LICENSED BY THE STATE?
A: Yes. We are fully licensed and certified by the state of Maryland and the MVA.
Q: ARE YOUR INSTRUCTORS CERTIFIED?
A: Yes. All of our instructors are certified driving instructors in the state of Maryland. They all undergo a rigorous training process and a thorough background check.
Q: CAN I REQUEST A SPECIFIC INSTRUCTOR FOR MY DRIVING LESSONS?
A: Maybe! Some of our instructors only work in certain parts of town, or on certain days of the week. But if there’s someone you’d like to drive with, let us know and we will try to schedule you with that person.
Q: WHAT SAFETY EQUIPMENT ARE YOUR CARS EQUIPPED WITH?
A: All of our cars are specially equipped with a passenger-side brake pedal and rearview mirror. Our stickshift car also has a passenger-side gas pedal and clutch. We keep cones and reflectors in the trunks in case of emergency.
Q: WHAT WILL I LEARN IN CLASS?
A: Too much to mention here! If you’d like a preview of what driver’s ed is all about, you can pick up a Driver Handbook from the MVA or one of our classroom locations. Just be sure to come by during our business hours.
Q: WHAT WILL I LEARN ON THE ROAD?
We try to adapt the in-car driving lessons to each individual student. Our goal is to cover as wide a range of skills as possible within the limited time that we have. Our focus is to make you a safe and courteous driver.
Q: WILL YOU PICK ME UP?
A: Not for the classes, but for driving lessons we do pick up students within a certain range. Generally, if you live within 15 minutes of one of our classrooms we will be able to pick you up. If you think you might be too far away, give us a call and we’ll look into it.
Q: HOW DO I SCHEDULE A TEST AT THE MVA?
A: The easiest way to schedule a test is to visit the MVA website and click on the link labeled “Scheduling Appointments.” This will guide you through the process step by step.
Q: MAY I USE ONE OF YOUR CARS FOR MY TEST?
A: We do allow people to use our cars for the driving test in nearly all MVA locations. The fee starts at $150 and increases based on time and travel requirements. For more information visit our MVA Road Test Escort page or contact us at 240 770 5212.
Q: WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING TO THE MVA FOR MY TEST?
A: You should bring your learner’s permit and your skills log. If you’re under 18, your skills log must be signed by the same person who signed for your learner’s permit.
Q: IS IT POSSIBLE TO FAIL DRIVER’S ED?
A: Yes, but it rarely happens. The final hour of driving does include an evaluation on which you must earn at least an 80% to pass. If we feel you are not practiced enough to pass this evaluation, we will suggest that you postpone your final driving lesson until you’ve gotten more practice. By doing this we are able to prevent students from failing the course. However, it is ultimately up to you whether or not to postpone your lessons. If you decide not to, and you don’t pass the driving evaluation, you will have to return for a 30-minute reevaluation, which costs $30.
Q: WHAT HAPPENS IF I FAIL THE MVA TEST?
A: If you fail the MVA test, you’ll have to schedule another appointment to take it again. If you’ve paid us to have an instructor take you there in our car, and want to do so again, you’ll have to pay again for a new appointment. This can be quite costly, so it’s always a good idea to be sure you’re ready for the test before you go.
